Lesson 7 Direct, Purposeful Experiences and Beyond
As it is said, we can't go to the complicated without passing or acquiring first the basic things. It is also true when we apply such saying to our learning acquisition.
A principle of learning states that learning is a relatively permanent change in behavior of an individual due to his experiences. Edgar Dale proposed and believed that our experiences seem to fall in a cone- it is composed of concrete experiences being in the base which goes higher to the most abstract at the pinnacle of the cone.
In Lesson 7, the importance and significance of our 'direct' experience is being emphasized. I have learned that direct experiences are firsthand experiences that serve as the foundation of learning. This kind of experience leads us to concept formation and abstraction. Furthermore, we should not end our lessons knowing only the concrete, but we should go beyond the concrete by reaching the level of abstract concepts.
